Understand the distinctions between Registered/ Certified counsellors, Registered Social Workers, Registered Psychologists, and Psychiatrists, and choose the appropriate professional for your mental health needs. Registered Psychologists have a Ph.D. or work under supervision, focusing on diagnosis and testing. Psychiatrists are medical doctors specializing in mental health, capable of prescribing medications. Registered Social Workers provide counselling therapy, although only those with a “clinical” designation possess the qualifications for mental health support.
Registered Clinical Counsellors are psychotherapists who have not only met masters level academic requirements, clinical competence and practice supervision requirements, they practice according to an ethical code of conduct and standards of practice established by BCACC.
